Gluten and Dairy-Free Apple Cake with Caramel Sauce

Make this Paleo apple cake that is light and fluffy and sweetened with fresh apples and pure maple syrup. It is perfect for breakfast or dessert and is gluten-free and Paleo friendly.



For the Cake

  1. 1/2 cup coconut flour *
  2. 1/2 tsp baking powder
  3. 1/4 tsp salt
  4. 1/4 tsp baking soda
  5. 1 tsp cinnamon
  6. 1/2 tsp nutmeg
  7. 3 eggs
  8. 1/3 cup pure maple syrup *
  9. 1/3 cup coconut oil, melted
  10. 1/2 cup unsweetened almond milk
  11. 1 tsp orange zest
  12. 1 Tbsp orange juice
  13. 1 tsp vanilla
  14. 2 small apples, peeled and diced (I used small gala apples)

For the Topping

  1. 1/4 cup almond flour *
  2. 2 Tbsp coconut oil
  3. 2 Tbsp coconut sugar *

For the Caramel (optional)


For the Cake

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 F degrees
  2. Mix the dry ingredients in a large bowl
  3. Add the remaining ingredients for the cake (except for the apples) and combine well
  4. Stir in the apples
  5. Pour into a greased 8×8 baking dish
  6. Combine all of the ingredients for the topping until a crumbly mixture is formed
  7. Sprinkle over the cake
  8. Bake for 35-45 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean

For the Caramel (optional)

  1. While cake is baking heat the ingredients for the caramel in a saucepan over medium heat
  2. Allow to come to a boil and reduce heat to low
  3. Stirring frequently, allow caramel to simmer for 15-20 minutes until it starts to thicken
  4. Remove from heat and allow to cool for another 15-20 minutes
