Question from Danielle E. – What Are Good Foods to Eat on Paleo for Breastfeeding Moms to Keep Milk Supply Up?
This is a common question in the Paleo Recipes and Support Facebook Group so I compiled a list of the answers here in this post so you can read through responses from real people. Have your own questions? Ask them in the above group and see if they get featured in the Paleo Questions category.
Stacy B. – Sweet potatoes and avocados
Ashley P. – Calories+electrolytes+water= milk supply!
Most women need between 1800-2500 while breastfeeding.
Electrolytes- make sure they are in check daily. You can experience a dip in your supply! (even high carb breastfeeding mothers can experience an electrolyte imbalance and a dip in their supply)
Water- make sure a minimum of half your weight in oz daily.
If experiencing a dip OR just want to produce more slightly increase calories and try power pumping.
Youtube and Pinterest have great blogs on power pumping.
Erica C. – Apples and chug the water
Kaitlin E. – As long as mother hasn’t gone on an extreme diet (keto, cutting calories, etc), and doesn’t have certain health conditions, proper hydration and expressing often enough is all you need.
Supply is supply and demand without those factors so latch baby on demand if a latcher, pump when apart or if EP every 2-3 hrs, and pace feed the proper amount when giving bottles is all the majority of mamas need 🙂
Canda B. – Variety!!!
Solange N. – Fennel tea makes your body produce lots of milk, helps your baby to digest better and makes you lose tummy fat.
Nicole F. – Bone broth!
Rachel F. – Water and calories worked for me. I could really tell when I wasn’t getting enough of those things.
Rebecca B. – Smoothies like this one with avocado can be a great way to get more liquid, carbs and electrolytes all at once. You can even freeze the extra and make popsicles.
