Samantha E. What’s the best test to test for a food allergy?
I still have inflammation in my body even doing Paleo.. I’ve been paleo for 7 months strict and 4 years prior to a lapse..
This is a common question in the Paleo Recipes and Support Facebook Group so I compiled a list of the answers here in this post so you can read through responses from real people:
Nikki D. – Go to an allergist or a naturopath. I tried figuring things out on my own for my daughter’s issues for years. Finally took her to a naturopath and discovered things I would have never figured out to change and it has been great for her.
C Charrae D. – SPOT ON!
Samantha E. – I’ve been seeing a naturopath for 7 months now..gut is good but man I keep having other problems..and so I also go to an integrative doctor who works with her in the same office..but atlas still inflammation
Debra C. – I agree AIP is the best way to go. Every allergist I’ve ever been to has told me that there is no RELIABLE test for food allergies although there are companies that sell kits that claim otherwise. I have found that an elimination diet works, but it’s a very slow process and some foods take days to show symptoms. I read an article that I have found works for me. Take your heartrate… eat a regular portion of a single food you question, wait 10-15 minutes. If your heart rate increases more than 10 beats a minute, then you have an intolerance to that food. Good luck. I’ve been years trying to figure it out. Everybody is different and age changes things too.
Julie M. – Exactly. Food sensitivity testing is NOT reliable. You need an elimination diet like AIP.
Melissa C. – AIP saved my life.
Margaret L. – What’s AIP?
Melissa C. – it’s paleo but with more restrictions: no nightshades, no nuts, legumes, and grains
Melissa C. – it’s short for the autoimmune protocol.
Charleen T. – Sometimes it’s more than just foods. When I got tested it also showed the chemicals I had reactions to. Propylene Glycol is in almost every over the counter products, and that was one of my biggest reactors, causing severe migraines within the day.
Samantha E. – I did get rid of chemicals in my house about 2-3 months ago..dish soap to laundry detergent to just soap or cleaners..it seems the harder I try to live clean the worse I get..
Charleen T. – also check things like hair products, deodorants, toothpaste, body washes, perfumes, lotions. I had to change all of those things. Also, over the counter medications. I have to be very careful what I take or use, whether it be a pill I take by mouth or something I put on my skin.
Samantha E. – same..I cannot drink chamomile or green tea..I changed all things in my house..including mentioned..I don’t wear perfume..unbelievable how horrible household things are for a person..
Natalie H. – Find a nutritionist that administers the MRT media release test. It tests for 170 foods and chemicals and tests for more than than one type of reaction. Broccoli ended up being one of my highly reactive foods. Insurance doesn’t typically cover the test but mine did cover the nutritionist’s fee
Alisha B. – I would find a naturopath who does allergy testing. It isn’t always reliable, but at least it gives you a place to start. My naturopath also suggested keeping a food diary. Don’t write everything you eat down, but whenever you have a symptom pop up, then write down everything you’ve eaten twelve hours prior. This only works for allergies that have immediate reactions though.
Cutting out eggs and nightshades would probably be another good place to start if you’re already completely 100% dairy and gluten-free.
Tracy M. – I’ve been on Paleo for 6 years and have tried doing the autoimmune protocol for 2 months straight with no healing. I am currently on it again and I’m going to try 3 months this time. I also eat low lectin and low histamine, but still no relief. There are people that it took two years to heal on the protocol, but I just can’t seem to eat that way long-term. Paleo yes, AIP no 😔 I wish you the best of luck in your healing journey. You are not alone 💜
Paige G. – I did the ALCAT
Jo S. – Low fodmap
Annette P. – Get checked for sibo. Breath test
Sherry H. – I have heard of people following the diet for a few years before they experienced a change. You could also try AIP.
Andrea B. – Paleo is great, but the autoimmune protocol is better!
