Are you wondering what the benefits of drinking water daily are? Are diet drinks bad for you? You may be surprised at how unhealthy soda really is.
You hear it all the time…
“”I really should drink more water”
Well if you know you should, why don’t you? Maybe if you really think about how incredibly important water is for your body, you would?
How VITAL it is for:
Preventing Cancer (YES PREVENTING Colon, bladder and even breast cancer!!)
Your Body is made up 69% of water! Did you know that? That is a lot. The Brain is 85% water–which totally makes sense because whenever I haven’t gotten my water throughout the day I drag! Not just my body, but my brain!! Drinking water=mental clarity!!! Your Bones are 35% water (bones? Really? Who knew!!) Blood is 83% water and the Liver is 90% water. 90%! Hello, that’s a lot!!!
I used to think, There is no way I can drink that much water! I would drown!
Now oftentimes when I drink, I literally imagine my body getting what it needs to energize and refresh!! If you don’t drink enough water, your body will then begin to ration the water it delivers to each organ…..So by drinking that important H2O, you are basically allowing your body to hydrate everywhere it NEEDS!
There is an interesting post on blog.watershed.net by Bob McCauley
This post has some very good facts that should be enough to get you thinking! And drinking!
Some of which are:
-Preliminary research indicates that 8-10 glasses of water per day could significantly ease back and joint pain for up to 80% of sufferers.
-A mere 2% drop in body water can trigger fuzzy short term memory, trouble with basic math, and difficulty focusing on a computer screen or printed page.
-Drinking 5 glasses of water daily decreases the risk of Colon Cancer by 45%, Breast Cancer by 79%, and Bladder Cancer by 50%
-Drinking enough water can also play a big role in weight loss. In fact all the time, people complain about always wanting to “snack” on foods. And then I ask how much water they drink and its always the same answer, “hmmmm, probably not enough haha!” Yes, probably not, because most people confuse HUNGER with DEHYDRATION!! Your body is actually dehydrated and literally BEGGING for water and then you go and eat some M&M’s! You always hear “Get your 8 glasses a day!” Well, actually they now say that you should be drinking AT LEAST half your body weight in ounces of water. I weigh 120, so I would drink 60 ounces MINIMUM. (I actually drink 90 , hence the “AT LEAST”)
Okay now that we have talked about the NEED for WATER, lets chat about the harm that quenching your thirst with soda can do! You don’t have to look very far to find the harmful effects that soda has on your body! I read a news article on KSL.com the other day that I highly recommend! It was called “This is what happens when you drink soda”
In the article it states,
“With high levels of sugar, acids, preservatives, and other harmful ingredients, soda causes more damage to the body than just expanding the waistline. From stroke to kidney stones to dementia…..” (seriously if that isn’t enough to scare you I don’t know what is!) It goes on to talk about the detailed effects soda has on your brain, teeth, heart, lungs, bones, kidneys, digestive system, and weight. All those same things that water helps, hmmm?!!! See a correlation here!?
As much as I don’t want to admit this, I am literally speaking from experience. A few short years ago, when I would be tired or feeling yuck (which was pretty much every second of every day!) I would say, “Oh man, I really need a Diet Dr. Pepper today!” I would even beg my hubby to bring me one on his way home from work! I’d drink it, think it helped give me energy, and then continue on feeling even worse-heavy and bloated!! Whats worse is I did not recognize the soda was actually making me feel more gross. And I literally thought I needed it. When I decided to lose 80 lbs I read several articles on the effect soda has on your body. I decided I would only have a Dr. Pepper when we were out on a date! I started drinking more water (even though I hated it back then!) and all of a sudden I started to FEEL BETTER!!! I had more energy, could think more clearly and realized my body had been needing water for a long time!
Then a funny thing happened- We went out on a date one evening and I decided I deserved a treat and ordered a diet soda! I drank only a tiny bit before I realized I was feeling so bloated and full and I actually recognized that feeling as how I used to feel “normally” when I drank soda a lot. Isn’t that sad? I did not even know that soda was dragging me down and making me feel gross! Later I got severe stomach pains-and after a few more attempts at soda I realized that it was the cause! I now look at soda as literal poison to my body and get sick at the thought of how much I used to drink!
If you are not a “fan of water” or question whether or not you are getting enough, I highly encourage you to keep track of your daily water consumption! Remember, drink half your body weight! A fun way to keep track and always be sure you have some water with you is by drinking from a Water Jug! I actually just use a Camelback and know that every single day my goal is to drink four or five 24 oz Camelbacks per day! (not guzzle down before bed! But sipping throughout the day between and during meals.)
Another FUN way to drink water is by drinking sparkling water! I like to get a big glass of Sparkling Water and ice and squeeze a whole lemon, lime or even grapefruit in it! You can add Stevia or Truvia if you need it sweeter, but I prefer mine without! If you want to try a homemade cream soda you can try vanilla extract and stevia to taste! (start with a little!) Sparkling Water is also a good way to get off of the soda! It gives you a ZIP without all the yuck!
Make your water interesting just by adding a straw! Sounds silly I know, but drinking from a straw gets me drinking!
And don’t forget your kids! Kids need water too! Make sure they have water available to them when out and about in a hot car or at the park! Sometimes my daughter gets fussy and it only takes a minute to realize she is just thirsty! Sometimes they don’t even know that’s why they are feeling off! (Just like sometimes as adults we don’t realize it as well!)
Another great idea is to add some essential oils to your drinking water.
Hope this article was helpful! Water can help you in so many ways! Keep track and make sure you and your kids are getting enough daily! You can find a few more simplified facts on water here: http://www.ehow.com/about_5436533_importance-water-life.html#page=1(Blog images from Flickr.com)
