The Best Paleo Pizza Crust Recipe {Video}

The Best Paleo Pizza Crust Recipe {Gluten-Free, Dairy-free, Clean Eating}

This is the best Paleo pizza crust recipe which is also gluten-free, grain-free, dairy-free, and clean eating. Now you can eat pizza just like everyone else! Pizza is one of those foods that almost everyone loves. There are so many ways to customize a pizza, it is amazing!

The Best Paleo Pizza Crust Recipe

You can pretty much put any toppings on it you want and the chances are you will like it! Pizza is also one of the foods that are really hard to give up when one decides to change to a Paleo diet, which is why I made this paleo pizza dough recipe.

Keep in mind that the texture of the crust is not going to be like a conventional pizza crust, but the flavor is fantastic. Since there is no yeast used, this crust is fast to throw together and bakes more quickly as well.

I've had several disasters trying to make cauliflower pizza crusts. They were always a big, floppy mess. Well, worse than floppy - in pieces all over the place and stuck to the pan. I wanted to make something that tasted more like a "normal" pizza and had a thin, crusty crust that you can actually pick up with your hands.

You could use the basic recipe to also make "garlic bread," calzones, pizza pockets and anything else you would use pizza crust for.

This recipe is great because it gives us Paleo diet people a chance to enjoy a classic dish and still enjoy the flavor. Yet another win - having a recipe everybody loves and not having to completely modify the menu!

Ingredients

  • Almond flour *, tapioca flour *, and coconut flour * - I use these three flours together more than once on my website. I feel like they balance each other well and you get a good flavor and texture that is closer to all-purpose flour. I would NOT recommend subbing any of the flours.
  • Egg - this helps to bind everything together. Commenter Niki was able to sub the egg with 1 Tbs ground Flaxseed * with 2.5 Tbs water slurry and omit the honey with good results.
  • Coconut milk * - I have only tried this recipe with coconut milk * but you should be able to sub a different plant-based milk. Please comment and let me know if you have tried something else and if it did or didn't work. That would help other people too.

Toppings

I topped mine for the photo with BBQ sauce, chicken, cilantro, fresh mozzarella, and red onions and it was really good. Technically, it wasn't Paleo cause I cheated and had a little mozzarella that day but if you want a good Paleo cheese for pizza and an idea for a unique sauce and toppings, try my almond flour pizza. This recipe provides a way to have a "cheesy" flavor without actually using cheese!

Some other good toppings are peppers, onion, mushrooms, fresh basil, pineapple, and Paleo-friendly proteins like pepperoni, sausage, Canadian bacon, bacon, etc.

I have to confess that one of my all-time favorite pizza toppings is artichoke hearts. I make a pizza pretty often with grass-fed beef, artichoke hearts, asparagus and green onions.

I know it doesn't really qualify as a pizza, but it's good, especially when you sprinkle it with some extra avocado oil and are generous with your Real Salt *. It makes it greasy and crunchy, just how I like it.

A fun topping could be to use my Paleo pesto as the sauce or just stick with a simple pizza sauce. You could add Italian seasoning to the crust or top for extra flavor.

A fun optional topping is grape tomatoes cut in half and arugula, marinated in olive oil & balsamic (thanks to commenter Deb).

I like chicken on my pizza because it's low-fat and Paleo, but I really love grass-fed beef on my pizza. If you're going to cook chicken, make sure you add some spices to the frying pan, like some paprika and garlic powder. It will make a HUGE difference in the flavor with barely any effort. Otherwise, it will just taste like plain chicken and I don't know about you, but I don't like plain chicken.

Please COMMENT with your favorite topping combinations, we would love to try some of them out! I also recommend you check out the comments to see the many positive reviews and to get ideas for toppings and adaptations to the recipe.

FAQ

Is yeast allowed in Paleo?

Yes, yeast is Paleo. You may find some hardcore Paleo people that don't eat it.

Is there any cheese that is Paleo?

I'm sorry but the answer is NO. Cheese is made from milk with is dairy and the only dairy that some people consider Paleo is butter.

Is xanthan gum Paleo-friendly?

No, xanthan gum isn't Paleo-friendly either.

Is nutritional yeast Paleo-friendly?

Yes, nutritional yeast is allowed but don't get it confused with active dry yeast. They are not similar in the least and serve very different purposes. Nutritional yeast does have a slightly cheesy flavor though.

Description

This is a pizza crust recipe that was created for someone who lives a paleo diet but has great flavor and texture that anyone could enjoy.

Ingredients

Scale
  • ½ Cup Almond Flour *
  • ½ Cup Tapioca Flour *
  • ¼ Cup Coconut Flour *
  • ¾ tsp Real Salt *
  • 1 egg
  • ¼ Cup Extra Virgin Olive Oil
  • ⅓ Cup Canned Coconut Milk *
  • 1 tsp Honey

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 450 degrees.
  2. Place the almond flour, tapioca flour, coconut flour, and salt in a bowl and mix together.
  3. Make a well the center of the combined flours.
  4. In a small bowl, whisk together the egg, olive oil, coconut milk, and honey.
  5. Pour the mixture into the well of dry ingredients.
  6. Combine with a rubber spatula, mixture may seem a little wet at first.
  7. Let it sit for a few minutes and the coconut flour will soak up the excess moisture.
  8. Shape the dough into a slightly sticky and not perfectly formed ball (see photo under the recipe). If the dough is a little too sticky (because of a large egg, high humidity, etc.), you may need to add a little extra tapioca flour.
  9. Place the ball on a sheet of parchment paper.
  10. Lightly dust your hands with tapioca flour and press the dough out into a 12" circle. Crust should be thin, about ¼".
  11. Slide hands underneath the parchment paper and flip the crust over onto a pizza stone or greased baking sheet.
  12. Slowly peel back the parchment paper and discard.
  13. Top the crust with desired sauce and toppings and bake on the bottom rack of the preheated oven.
  14. Bake for 12 minutes to get a crust that is still a bit soft underneath, for a crisper crust bake 15+ minutes.
  15. Remove and slice with a roller cutter.

Notes

Many commenters recommend pre-cooking the crust for 10 minutes before adding toppings then bake for 8-10 more minutes after adding toppings.

What a wonderful recipe! I doubled the recipe size and made multiple pizzas last night. It was simple yet tasty. Even our non-Paleo-eating friends will enjoy this. I added nutritional yeast and Greek oregano and red pepper flakes to the dry ingredients for a small flavor boost; pre-baked for 10 minutes as suggested, then removed from the oven and topped with homemade Paleo-pesto and other toppings, popped it back in the hot oven for 10 minutes. YUM! Delicious. This will be my future go-to pizza crust.

This pizza crust was so delicious. Being grain free this was the closest I’ve found to the real thing. It was a real treat. I made a homemade BBQ sauce and topped it with some cashew cheese and grilled chicken.

Perfect 👌🏾 I made it without the honey and it still had a slightly sweet taste in my opinion. I also followed the recommendations to precook.

Has anybody tried freezing it? I’m wondering if it freezes well and should I freeze raw or cooked?

I wanted to update this - I decided to just go for it and freeze the crust after first baking it the recommended 10 minutes. Turned out great. I just take it out in the afternoon to thaw, top with my desired toppings and bake for about 10 minutes give or take.
This is really helpful in using up the can of coconut milk if you are only needing one pizza at a time and have no other use for it. Plus it makes pizza night a little easier!

I've tried making so many different pizza bases since we went gluten free, then grain free. These are absolutely the best pizza bases I've tried (a unanimous agreement amongst our family of 5). No more searching, this will be our go-to from now on.

Excellent! I made this crust for dinner tonight. It was a hit. This is now my go to recipe for a paleo crust, and it is so easy to whip together. I added some garlic powder and Italian seasoning and prebaked the crust. It is so nice to eat a paleo pizza with my hands. Thank you for creating a great recipe!!

Wow....this is the first time I have used coconut flour or almond flour. This turned out great! I doubled the recipe and used flaxseed eggs, because everyone in my house is allergic to eggs. My son was bummed this week, because he didn’t get to eat Little Caesars on the last day of band camp due to his many food allergies. The pizza I made with this crust more than made up for that with him!

Unfortunately, coconut flour is pretty much impossible to replace. But I do have a lot of recipes on my blog that don't use coconut flour you may want to check out. Some flours that may not cause you problems are arrowroot, tapioca, cassava and tigernut. Check out recipes for those here - https://www.mynaturalfamily.com/paleo-flours-guide/

Disclaimer: this is the only Paleo pizza crust recipe I have ever tried so I have nothing to compare it to. Verdict; I don't need to try any other Paleo pizza crust recipes because this one is everything I would have hoped for! Based on some of the reviews, I preheated a pizza stone and pre-baked the crust for 10 minutes before loading it with toppings. We then baked it for another 10 and it turned out perfect for us. It was firm enough to pick up with our hands while loaded with meat, veggies, and cheese (we aren't 100% Paleo). I'm not kidding when I say that this was all I could have hoped for. I don't need to try any other pizza crust recipes because this one is perfect. This coming from a true Pizza Lover. I did add an extra tablespoon of tapioca flower because the dough was still quite sticky after sitting for 15 minutes. But it was easy to shape and delicious. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

I made a feta sauce with feta cheese and plain yogurt and spread it on and topped with caramelized onions and crimini mushrooms and baked for another 10 to 15 min. It was so good!

This was my 1st attempt at a paleo pizza crust and I'm delighted how delicious it was, since pizza IS a family favorite (pretty much a staple with teenage boys!) and we recently learned my son has wheat gluten AND egg allergy. Thankfully I was able to substitute 1 Tbs ground Flaxseed with 2.5 Tbs water slurry for the egg & I omitted the honey, and it turned out perfectly! I also baked it on pizza stone for 10 min
BEFORE adding toppings, then baked for additional 8-10 minute with toppings just because I feared a doughy crust and like ours "done". It was just right- not crunchy, but able to hold all the toppings; and We LOADED it up with a ton of meat, cheese and veggies (we're not really paleo, more like KETO for candida). All 3 sons (ages 15/14/& 9yrs) LOVED this crust. The coconut flour gives the crust just a hint of sweetness which is so yummy with all the savory toppings. I'm so happy I found this recipe! THANK YOU!

Hi! I just made this and it was very satisfying! I just stared a 21 day sugar detox and was already going a little crazy. I'm a baker so am very picky about breads of any sort (including pizza) and this was good. I had a question: what should the texture of the dough be when it's ready to roll out? Mine was still pretty sticky so I added extra coconut flour.

    Reply
    • Rebecca

      July 19, 2016 at 7:56 pm

You may be able to tell the texture from the photo under the recipe, but it should not be crumbly and not too sticky. Just a little sticky. It's very possible you may have to add a little coconut flour, depending on your environment, like the humidity in the room.

I had the same issue. I added more coconut flour but it was still really sticky. I went with what I had and rolled it out between two pieces of parchment and pre-baked it before topping it. It worked out well. The crust was on the softer side but gluten-lovers in the house thought that it had good flavor. Thank you!

I made one small change as it is very humid today and added 1 extra tbsp of coconut flour and it was great, though I probably didn't need it. I love how easy, and quick it is. I also had all the ingredients on hand. So many paleo recipes call for coconut, almond, and tapioca flour that I keep them around, and regular groceries are now carrying them. Thanks for satisfying my "pizza tooth!"

Just came across this, recently found out I have to go gluten AND dairy (casein/cow) free, which is fine. There are alternatives, but I was wondering if any of these flours are a gluten cross-reactive?

Sounds like the Paleo diet will be a good match for you since it's grain free and dairy free. These flours are not grains at all so they are not gluten cross-reactive.

so I never take the time to comment on a recipe however I just got done eating this pizza crust and WOW AMAZING! I've been paleo/SCD for 2 years and have missed pizza. This was so close to a real pizza, I did make a few changes I baked it on a greased pizza pan with holes made it perfectly crispy my daughter doesn't like sauce so I just put our goats milk cheese on (Gouda made from goats milk) it with some black olives and drizzled it with a bit of olive oil. Oh I also used cashew milk rather then the coconut.

But the recipe says 4 servings, doesn't it?

It does now. I decided that 4 servings is a more realistic size.

Wow I just made this crust and I'm SO impressed with it! Definitely the best paleo pizza crust! I topped it with pizza sauce, garlic, tomatoes, green peppers, turkey pepperoni and cheese. Yum!! Thankyou so much for this.

    Hi
I am not a great baker.. I do not have very delicate hands? Will it work for me? I am reluctant to buy all the ingredients if you need to be a good pastry maker.

    Many Thanks

You do not need to be a baking pro or have delicate hands to make this dough. As long as you can flatten it out with a rolling pin(see instructions) it will turn out fine! You’re basically just patting the dough out into a circular shape 😉

Almond milk, or any other milk alternative should work just fine.

Tried this last night. It's a keeper. I added some Italian herbs to the crust for some extra flavor. The texture is decent, and we could actually PICK UP our pizza! Thanks for sharing!

I dont have tapioca flour. Can I do more of almond or coconut flours to get similar results? I have both of those on hand....

The tapioca flour has a gummy quality that helps to bind the dough a little bit. Though it would no longer be paleo, you could use cornstarch in its place. Arrowroot powder would also work. You could try adding a little bit more of both the almond and coconut flour, but the resulting dough would be extra delicate.

Thanks for sharing this. My mother-in-law has gone gluten-free but loves a good grilled pizza (my husband makes some of the best), so now we can plan a pizza night when she's around. Definitely going to have to pin this for later!

I'm looking forward to trying the pizza crust & some of your other recipes. I have Fibromyalgia pretty severely & while I've read about a few people feeling better while trying Paleo/Gluten free diets I just recently met someone who actually was feeling much better. I'm hoping to give it a try starting in June. My favorite pizza is one I tried recently based on a pioneer woman recipe. It's basically a pizza using pesto instead of tomato sauce. She served with grape tomatoes, cut in half marinated in olive oil & balsamic. I served with a bowl of arugula & cut up grape tomatoes well coated in my balsamic salad dressing. It's just balsamic, extra virgin olive oil (amts are really to taste, I like a lot of balsamic. Salt & pepper, & a little thyme) I use this on salads always & my husband usually does & I marinate chicken in it the. Grill or bake. To us the pizza was best with a lot of arugula & tomatoes on top!
