Christmas is getting close and it’s time to start finding those perfect recipes for your Christmas dinner or maybe your Christmas party. My pet peeve is when company’s write on packages or people say this is gluten-free and that’s gluten-free and it’s something that’s is always naturally gluten-free like, say water. Oh, that just bugs me to death.
So while I do have some recipes in this post that are probably always gluten-free like the ham and vegetables. The majority of these recipes are for dishes that do always have gluten in them such as stuffing and rolls and cookies and pie etc.
Thanksgiving and Christmas are a really hard time of year for people that have to eat gluten-free especially when you go to a party and there are tons of desserts that contain tons of gluten. Now you can volunteer to make the dessert and you can make one or more of these gluten-free recipes here and no one else will even know or care that it’s gluten-free.
Christmas recipes are a big part of Christmas traditions. We love Christmas in our family, we celebrate it for the whole month of December it seems like every year. We have parties and activities for days before Christmas day. What do you do at those parties?
Well, I bet you already guess it, we eat among other things. It seems to be the time of year when all or most of my siblings and aunts and uncles are in town. Because of that, we have to see them and get together. So, we end up doing something every day they are here.
One night we have a soup party hosted by the brother. One day we try to go to a church and play games in the gym for hours. It gets the kids moving and burns off some of their pent-up energy. One night we have a family night and have a spiritual lesson and all the grandkids act out the nativity.
We have our big dinner on Christmas Eve with about 35 people together in my parent’s house. They fixed their garage up nice with insulation and sheetrock and painted it and they heat it up for that day. They roll a carpet out on the floor and they set up enough tables and chairs for everyone to have a nice sit-down dinner. It works out well because their house isn’t big enough for that many people.
On Christmas day after each family opens their presents, we get together about lunchtime. We eat leftovers from the night before and add a bunch of appetizers like cheese balls and crackers. Of course, we usually make twice as much as we know we’ll eat for Christmas Eve dinner just so we’ll have enough for leftovers the next day.
We really like to do it this way because we spend most of the time in the kitchen the day before. Then at Christmas, we can relax and just enjoy being together and not have to cook so much.
Sometimes we have turkey, sometimes we have ham or something else. Most of us are tired of turkey since Christmas is so soon after Thanksgiving and we always have turkey on Thanksgiving. I’d like to have a nice beef tenderloin this year. . .

Our whole loves to go to Red Lobster and we especially enjoy the cheddar biscuits. Well, that was the way it was until we discovered our son is allergic to gluten and can’t eat the biscuits at Red Lobster anymore. Since it isn’t fair and it’s too big of a hassle that our son can’t eat the biscuits there and the girls can, we don’t eat at Red Lobster anymore.
I mean I don’t know anyone that can eat there without eating the biscuits. So now we stay home and make our own. This is a substitution friendly recipe. You can use any brand of gluten-free flour, it doesn’t matter what you use for sugar, honey, Stevia, agave, and sugar all work fine. The fat is the same way. You can use butter, coconut oil, olive oil or ghee. Butter is the traditional fat to use and I think it tastes the best. Just use whatever works best for you and yours.

As I have mentioned before, my mom grew up in Idaho and so a big part of our meals has always been potatoes. We usually have some type of cheesy potatoes to go with our ham. Ham and scalloped potatoes as we call them is my brother’s favorite meal of all time. I like this recipe uses gluten-free corn flakes to give it the crunchy texture.

My Grandma used to make a whole bunch of different kinds of cookies for Christmas every year and give them to her friends and neighbors. She always made these snowball cookies every year. It’s one of my favorite memories I have of my grandma. The best part was the anticipation of taking a bite of one of these cookies and not knowing what was inside.
We love the surprise factor involved. There would always either be a half a walnut or pecan or a piece of an orange slice or a gumdrop. I think you could use regular gluten-free flour if you wanted to. You can’t have Christmas dinner without pie, that’s just a given. At least it is in our family. Now the kind of pie we have is always up for debate. Some of but not very many of us want pumpkin. Did I mention there are usually more than 30 people at our Christmas dinners?
That’s why it’s so hard. Others like chocolate and pecan. Of course, some want apple too so I chose this Dutch apple pie because it looks so good to me. In case you are curious. We usually end up with one pie of each kind. With that many people, we need that many pies.
